How to Give Distance Reiki Sessions: A Complete Guide for Reiki Practitioners

Learn how to confidently offer effective distance Reiki sessions with structure, tools, and spiritual insight.

Distance Reiki, also called Enkaku Chiryo in Japanese, allows you to send healing energy to clients, loved ones, and communities anywhere in the world. Whether you're new to Reiki or a seasoned practitioner, learning how to offer Distance Reiki sessions can expand your practice and help you serve others more deeply.

What Is Distance Reiki? Understanding How Remote Healing Works

The Distance Symbol (HSZSN) creates a bridge of light, sending Reiki energy through time and space. As the practitioner, Reiki flows through you as a clear channel of healing energy. The energy comes from the source of Reiki, not your personal life force, allowing you to stay grounded and supported throughout the session.

This understanding helps prevent burnout and energetic overwhelm. It also clarifies your role in the healing process. By staying in the observer role, you allow Reiki to do the work while maintaining your own boundaries and clarity.

You may also receive intuitive impressions during Distance Reiki, just as you might in person. “Observing without absorbing” helps you stay balanced, centered, and present throughout the session.

Distance Reiki Tools: Symbols, Surrogates, and Sacred Space

Distance Reiki requires very little equipment, but the right tools can support your focus and presence:

  • Surrogates: Use a pillow, a photo, your lap, or your own body. Placing your hands on a surrogate helps you follow intuitive or traditional hand positions.
  • The Distance Symbol (HSZSN): It connects you to pure consciousness.
  • Crystal Grids: Charged with Reiki energy, a crystal grid can continuously send healing. Activate it with intention, spoken or written.

There are many effective ways to share Distance Reiki. The right approach is the one that supports your connection and aligns with your intention.

Many Distance Reiki sessions are held in real time with both practitioner and client present. Here’s how to prepare:

  • Technology: Use Zoom, Facetime, or phone calls. Audio-only sessions let clients relax without needing to be on camera.
  • Session Length: Most sessions last 45 to 60 minutes. It is nice to allow 90 minutes to include intake and discussion.
  • Sacred Space: Begin by creating a peaceful, focused environment. Use an invocation to invite Reiki and ground the session.

Distance Reiki Session Structure: From Intake to Closing

Having a consistent session format helps your clients feel supported and helps you stay focused.

    • Introduction: Explain the session process and what to expect, including how it will close.
    • Invocation: Use a spoken or silent invocation (prayer) to invite Reiki.
    • Client Intention: Ask two key questions: “What do you want to let go of today?” and “What do you want to bring in today?”
  • Activate Reiki: Do this your way.
  • Receiving Reiki: Have your client get comfortable. Think of their name, use the Distance Symbol, and follow intuitive hand positions on your surrogate.
  • Closing the Session: Let the client know when the session is ending. Say your closing phrase and allow quiet time. Some clients want to talk, others prefer not to talk and will disconnect. Let them know of this option before the session then ask them again after the session.

Reiki and Intuition: How to Receive Guidance During Distance Sessions

Here are some suggestions for your distance session. During the Reiki session, listen to energy and intuition:

  • Follow Reiki Energy: Use Byosen scanning or traditional hand positions. Let the energy lead.
  • Write Down Messages if You Choose: Use automatic writing to note intuitive impressions.
  • Ask the Client: If you sense a significant energetic release or shift, you may be guided to ask the client if they’re ready to let go or make a change. This can be done gently and respectfully. You may also be guided to ask them if they are ready to receive a significant Reiki empowerment. Otherwise, the session is mostly silent.
  • Trust the Process: Reiki responds to intention. Whether a session lasts 10 minutes or an hour, Reiki flows where the client needs it.

Flexible Distance Reiki Timing Options for Every Client

You have flexible options when scheduling Distance Reiki:

  • Real-Time: You and your client connect at the same time.
  • Scheduled Sending: You agree on a time, but don’t meet live.
  • Open Timing: You send Reiki when it fits your schedule. Reiki will reach the client at the right time.

Offer options that suit your client’s availability and comfort.

Tips for Growing Your Distance Reiki Practice

Begin small and build gradually:

  • Offer short sessions to friends or family.
  • Send Reiki daily to yourself, others, or the world.
  • Document your experiences and insights for your own learning and client support.

As you continue, you’ll notice stronger energetic awareness, intuitive development, and a deeper connection to your clients.

The Let Go and Bring In Method for Distance Reiki Healing

Every Reiki session follows a natural rhythm. You begin by letting go of what no longer serves, then invite in what brings healing and light. This rhythm helps reveal what is already present within the client and makes space for their inner healing to emerge.

You can use this rhythm in your own practice, too. Send Reiki to yourself each morning by releasing tension or old energy and calling in what supports your well-being.
